Sonjé – Slave trade and colonial slavery

Engaged since 2007, with the help of historians, archaeologists and various specialists, I photographed the heritage of the slave trade and colonial slavery, and its landscapes : forts, landing stages, plantations (sugar refinery, cafeteria, mansion), shipowners’ buildings, places of combat and marronnage, cemeteries of slaves. These photographs were taken in Africa (Ghana, Senegal), in the overseas territories (Martinique, Guadeloupe, Guyana, Réunion), in Haiti and in mainland France (Bordeaux, La Rochelle, Lorient, Le Havre, Nantes, Marseille).

This project has been doubly labeled (10-year label of the Taubira law by the French Overseas Ministry and the Slave Route label by UNESCO). It has been the subject of around 25 exhibitions in communities and museums, in France and abroad (see Exhibitions in situ).

The MEMWA book brings together this photographic work accompanied by legends and landmarks, as well as texts by Françoise VERGÈS, Frédéric RÉGENT, Doudou DIÈNE, Édouard MAUNICK.

I am continuing this project today through the other European countries involved in trafficking and slavery, the United States and the Caribbean, East Africa and the Indian Ocean.
